Rick Olsen just released a Ruby Gem Management plugin which adds a rake task to easily unpack any gem into your rails applications. An example of how it works:

rake gems:freeze GEM=tzinfo

You can read more about the plugin and download it from his subversion repository.

I bet he made it for Rails day.
